Obituary

Jerry Wiet Shumaker, 72, of Kingsland, Texas passed away December 14, 2019 at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born to Arley Ray and Myrtle (Wilmoth) Shumaker on March 5, 1947 in Grafton, West Virginia.

Jerry was born and raised in Grafton, West Virginia. Soon after finishing High School he selflessly joined the United Stated Marine Corps and was sent to Vietnam. During his time in the Marines, Jerry served as a combat engineer. He was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. After his time in the Marines, he joined the Army National Guard and served for fifteen more years.

Jerry worked for the New York Air Brake company in New York until his retirement in 1990. After his retirement the family moved from New York back to his hometown in West Virginia for a few years until settling in Kingsland, Texas in 2001. In Kingsland, Jerry was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and served as commander for several years. After the passing of his first wife, Joyce, Jerry was introduced to Melba Chance by a mutual friend. Jerry and Melba found comfort in each other’s company and were inseparable until his passing. The two of them enjoyed country and western dancing at Pat’s Bar, were faithful members of the Cross and Spurs Cowboy Church in Buchanan Dam, Texas, and volunteered together at the battered women and children’s thrift store in Marble Falls. Jerry enjoyed helping people in his community, volunteering and local events, and singing at Cross and Spurs Cowboy Church. His most valued pastime was time spent his children and grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of five years, Melba Shumaker of Kingsland, Texas; children, Candy Dubrunner and husband Steve, Scott Shumaker, and Jerry L. Shumaker, all of Kingsland, Texas; step sons, Phillip Rice and Billy Dean Rice of Arizona; grandchildren, Trina Purkey, Aaron Shumaker, Jazzmine Blazak, Regan Shumaker, Alex Shumaker, Karyline Shumaker, Cody Rice, Nicole Rice, Chance Rice, and Nicholas Rice; great-grandchildren, Jaden, Destanee, Kamden, Jaxson, Damion, Robert, Shaylee, Ava, Noah, Able and Theodore; sisters, Tootsie Beavers, Martha Shroyer, Marie Shumaker and Dora Irvine. Jerry also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Shumaker; brothers, Odbert, Warren and Albert Shumaker; sisters, Katherine Dale and Lynda Spring, and one step son, Paul Rice.

Serving as pallbearers will be, Billy Dean Rice, Phillip Rice, Billy Chance, Aaron Shumaker, and Glen Trombley, honorary pallbearers, Jerry Lee Shumaker and Scott Shumaker.

A visitation will be 4:00-6:00 P.M. Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Putnam Funeral Home in Kingsland, Texas. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 20, 2010 in the Putnam Funeral Home Chapel in Kingsland with Reverend Johnny Sawyer and Reverend Bobby Chance officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet, Texas with the Highland Lakes Honor Guard furnishing military Honors. An online guest register may be signed at www. PutnamCares.com
